The Extreme Rules and No Holds Barred matches represent an escalation from the traditional No-DQ match. In these stipulations, not only is disqualification (DQ) not an option, but there is also no count-out, meaning that victory can only be achieved through pinfall or submission within the ring.

Compared to the No-DQ match, the use of weapons and other extreme objects is more frequent and pronounced in these matches. This can include items such as barbed wire, tacks, and glass, making the match conditions more brutal.

Variants

In addition to Extreme Rules and No Holds Barred matches, there are other variants that, while identical in terms of match rules, differ slightly in kayfabe:

  • Unsanctioned Match: The promotion disclaims responsibility for any injuries or incidents that occur during the bout.

  • Monster's Ball Match: Popularized by TNA Wrestling, this match requires participants to spend several hours without food or drink prior to the bout (although this condition has been less emphasized in recent iterations).

  • Female Version: There is also a female version of the Extreme Rules match known as the Extreme Makeover Match. It follows the same rules as its male counterpart but features weapons and objects that are typically associated with feminine and household items, such as makeup, boards, and irons.
