The WWE Intercontinental Championship is a secondary title contested in World Wrestling Entertainment on the Raw brand, by men wrestlers.
The championship was first established on September 1, 1979, and the inaugural champion was Pat Patterson.
This is a newer version of the WWF North American Heavyweight Championship, with its own distinct lineage.
Since its inception in September 1979, the Intercontinental Championship has been held by WWE's greatest Superstars, including WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson, The Rock, Ultimate Warrior, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Bret "Hit Man" Hart, Shawn Michaels and Triple H.
The WWF European Championship and WWF Hardcore Championship were previously unified into this championship.
The current champion is Penta, who won the title on the episode of Raw on March 2, 2026, and has been reigning for 74 days.
