The championship was first established on February 15, 1989, and the inaugural champion was "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.
The title was created by Ted DiBiase, who decided that if he could not win or buy the WWF Championship, he would purchase his own belt, the Million Dollar Championship (not officially sanctioned by WWF).
