The three objects that define this stipulation are tables, ladders, and chairs.

A TLC match (also known as a Full Metal Mayhem match in TNA) is essentially a Ladder Match, where the goal is to retrieve the prize (usually a championship belt or similar) from a hook suspended above the center of the ring using a ladder. What sets it apart from a standard Ladder match is that the use of tables and chairs as weapons is not only permitted but highly recommended. These items can be used as blunt objects, surfaces for impact moves, or in any other way deemed advantageous.

The victory condition in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match mirrors that of a Ladder match: the only way to win is by retrieving the prize from the hook. Thus, pinfalls and submissions are not part of the match, nor are count-outs or disqualifications. Disqualifications are not enforced at all, not just for the use of the three signature weapons; however, these three types of weapons are typically the only ones used.

This stipulation can be applied to all major match types. A rare variation of the TLC match can be contested under different rules, where the match can only be won by pinfall or submission, rather than retrieving a prize.

The TLC match was invented in WWE (then WWF) for the Summerslam 2000 pay-per-view, combining the signature weapons of the three teams involved in that inaugural TLC match: tables for the Dudley Boyz (Ray & Devon), ladders for the Hardy Boyz (Jeff & Matt), and chairs for Edge & Christian.
