The Thundercage Match, invented by WCW, is named after the 1985 film "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome", which featured a similar cage.
In this stipulation, the ring is surrounded by a cage made of metal bars, with the sides tapering into a domed shape at the top, leaving a square opening in the center.
Variants in Other Promotions
The match has also been adopted by AAA, where it is called Domo de la Muerte, and by TNA, where it is known as the Steel Asylum Match. In these versions, the sides of the cage are straight, topped with a circular dome roof that features a small round hole at the center, just large enough for a person to pass through.
Winning Conditions
In the original WCW version, the match could be won by pinfall or submission. However, in its more modern adaptations, the match typically involves a variable number of wrestlers competing in an all-against-all format. The winner is the first wrestler to escape the structure through the opening at the top.
