In this type of match, an ambulance (from which the stipulation gets its name) is present on the stage, with the rear door open. No pinfalls, submissions, DQ, or count-outs are permitted; the only way to win is by throwing the opponent into the back of the ambulance and closing the door.
Additionally, an ambulance driver is present: for the victory to be valid, the ambulance must not only have its door closed, but it must also drive away and disappear into the backstage area. Typically, after the match concludes, the camera shows the ambulance leaving the arena, reinforcing the idea that the wrestler inside is being taken to the hospital.
This stipulation is always contested in a 1 vs 1 format.
Last Ride Match
There is also a variant of this stipulation known as the Last Ride match (or less commonly, Hearses match). This variant follows the same rules as the Ambulance match; the only difference is the mode of transport: instead of an ambulance, the opponent must be placed in a hearse and taken away in this particular vehicle. The Last Ride match, like many other macabre stipulations in this discipline, is associated with the Undertaker.
In Lucha Underground, another variant was contested using a military medical evacuation vehicle, known as the Medical Evac match.
