World Championship Wrestling was a Major pro wrestling promotion operating in the United States, based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The WCW promotion was founded on November 21, 1988 by Ted Turner, and it ceased operations on March 26, 2001.
The company played a pivotal role in the wrestling industry from the late 1980s through the 1990s. Originally part of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), WCW was acquired by media mogul Ted Turner in 1988 and became a direct competitor to WWE (then WWF). WCW is best known for its intense rivalry with WWE during the "Monday Night Wars," where its flagship show, Monday Nitro, went head-to-head with Monday Night Raw.
WCW was instrumental in popularizing wrestling on a mainstream level, with iconic moments such as the rise of the New World Order (nWo) and the emergence of stars like Sting, Ric Flair, and Goldberg.
Despite its initial success, WCW eventually declined due to mismanagement and was purchased by WWE in 2001, marking the end of one of the most significant eras in wrestling history.
