A Special Referee match is not a true stipulation but rather a modification that can be applied to almost any type of match. In these matches, instead of a professional referee, another personality serves as the match official.
The special referee can be another wrestler, a manager, the chairman, the general manager, a celebrity from outside the wrestling world, or anyone else deemed suitable.
Often, the special referee may be biased towards or against one of the competitors, or will be assigned as the referee to ensure the match is called down the middle.
A variation of this is the Special Enforcer match, where, in addition to the official referee, another personality oversees the match to ensure proper conduct. If the referee is incapacitated—either by being knocked out or for any other reason—the enforcer can step in to take over officiating duties.
