The Underground Match is a worked shoot match in a style that mimics the early days of MMA and catch wrestling. It is common for the competitors (both or just one of them) to have some knowledge of other combat sports and/or MMA, as this match often appears stiff.

It must end in either a knockout or submission, and the traditional wrestling ring is replaced by a black canvas with no ropes.

It was first introduced in 2018 for GCW Bloodsport, a series of events where each match is contested under these particular rules.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WWE introduced its version of this match with a segment called Raw Underground: it was a Fight Club inspired concept hosted and commentated by Shane McMahon and took place in the basement of the WWE Performance Center, with only other wrestlers present at ringside.

The concept was then adopted by NXT, but in this version it takes place in the main arena in front of the fans.
