International Championship Wrestling was a pro wrestling promotion operating in the United States, based in Lexington, Kentucky.
The ICW KY promotion was founded on June 23, 1979 by Angelo Poffo, and it ceased operations on January 12, 1984.
International Championship Wrestling was one of the most famous independent “outlaw” promotions of its time, as the outgrowth of a talent exodus from Southeastern Championship Wrestling, itself being the successor to the short-lived outlaw promotion All-Star Championship Wrestling. ICW was headed by Angelo Poffo, father to future Hall of Famer Randy Savage and Lanny “The Genius” Poffo, whom he would develop into stars especially during his promotion’s rivalry with the nearby CWA, led by Jerry Jarrett. ICW would eventually sell off into the CWA, where a young Savage ascended into the star he would eventually become.
