The I Quit Match revolves around two key words: "I quit". This stipulation does not involve victory through pinfall, submission, disqualification, or count-out. The only way to win is to force your opponent to say "I quit" — acknowledging surrender.
Victory can be achieved by using various methods: applying a submission hold, threatening with weapons, or other means. What matters is getting the opponent to utter "I quit" into the microphone.
During the match, an referee holds a microphone and, if requested by one wrestler, will ask the opponent if they want to surrender by bringing the microphone to them. Alternatively, the wrestler may take the microphone and ask the opponent directly. The opponent can either surrender by saying "I quit" or state their intention to continue.
This match type is exclusively contested in a 1 vs 1 format.
The first I Quit Match took place at NWA/JCP Starrcade 1985, where Magnum T.A. defeated Tully Blanchard. In WWE, the I Quit Match is considered a specialty of John Cena, who remains undefeated in this stipulation.
