Japanese Wrestling Association was a Major pro wrestling promotion based in Tokyo, Japan.
The JWA promotion was founded on July 30, 1953 by Rikidōzan, and it ceased operations on April 14, 1973.
The forbearer to modern Japanese wrestling, founded and operated by Rikidozan of Zainichi Korean origin, who gained the men’s popularity in the postwar Japanese years as a heroic figure representing the Japanese against American wrestlers of the time.
The JWA was the unified center of wrestling in Japan for many years, and ran from 1953 to 1973. After Rikidozan died in 1963, the promotions popularity was carried by a young Antonio Inoki and Giant Baba, whose uncontainable egos could no longer coexist, causing them both to leave in 1972, all but ending the strength of the JWA in Japan.
