Compared to WWE 2K20, which had two levels of Paybacks, WWE 2K22 features a smaller selection of Paybacks abilities, with only one level. The newest additions are marked with "NEW".
Also, Abilities, Skills & OMG Moments work differently now in WWE 2K22, as they're no longer assigned when customizing a Superstar. Check out our dedicated article to see what happened to them.
What are Paybacks in WWE 2K22?
The Payback System includes a set of special abilities designed to turn the tables on your opponent and change the momentum of the match.
Each Superstar can only have one Payback ability assigned, and they can also be selected/customized on the fly from the Superstar Selection screen.
How To Perform Paybacks in WWE 2K22:
Paybacks in WWE 2K22 are performed by consuming two bars of the Special Meter, which fills up over time when you give or receive damage.
With the new WWE 2K22 Controls Scheme, to activate a Payback Ability you must hold R2 + Triangle on PlayStation 4, or RT + Y on Xbox One.
A Payback can only be executed once per match.
WWE 2K22 Paybacks List:
1. Resiliency
Escape a Pin, Submission, or Elimination Mini-Game with ease.
How To Perform: Press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y during the mini-game to automatically escape.
2. Low Blow
Slow your opponent down with a Low Blow. Be careful not to get disqualified!
How To Perform: Press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y while kneeling to deliver a painful Low Blow to your opponent.
3. Poison Mist
Spray Poison Mist in your opponent's eyes. Be careful not to get disqualified!
How To Perform: Press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y when prompted to temporarily incapacitate your opponent with Poison Mist.
4. Power Of The Punch
Hit your opponent with brass knuckles. Ouch! Be careful not to get disqualified!
How To Perform: Press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y when prompted to attack your opponent with the Power of the Punch.
5. Run-In
Summon an ally to ringside to make the fight "fair". Only valid in 1 vs. 1 Matches.
How To Perform: To activate, hold R2 / RT and press Triangle / Y while in a downed state inside the ring.
6. Move Thief
Show up the competition by stealing their Finisher! Requires one Finisher for the opponent and two Special stock available for your Superstar.
How To Perform: To activate, press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y.
7. Blackout
Teleport behind your opponent to gain an advantage. Only valid in 1 vs. 1 Matches.
How To Perform: To activate, press R2 + Triangle / RT + Y while downed. Both Superstars must be inside the ring.
8. Comeback
Perform a comeback sequence when significantly damaged to turn things around (can be assigned in Custom Move-Set).
How To Perform: To activate, hold R2 / RT and press Triangle / Y.
Several Paybacks have been removed compared to previous years, such as the "Possum" payback, "Auto-Reversal" and other types of buffs, including all of the "fantasy" elements that were attached to 2K Originals in WWE 2K20.
