The championship was first established on October 4, 1976, and the inaugural champion was Strong Kobayashi & Seiji Sakaguchi.

The Asia Tag Team Championship was retired on April 23, 1981, with the final champion being Tiger Jeet Singh.

A similar championship, the IWGP Tag Team Championship, has been later introduced, which does not share the lineage with this title.
